Does Cetus GPS work with the Garmin iQue 3600 GPS?
Yes, but you need to download Cetus GPS 1.2b6 or a newer beta version from the beta download page. In GPS Preferences you must set mode to 'Normal' and Serial port to 'iQue'.
[Back]
Does Cetus GPS work with Sony Clie and Compact Flash GPS receivers?
Yes, Cetus GPS 1.2b6 and newer versions supports this via this driver. For a detailed list of supported Sony Clie and GPS models please look at the driver information page.
[Back]
Does Cetus GPS work with the Fortuna Bluetooth GPS?
Yes, but you need to download Cetus GPS 1.2b5 or a newer beta version from the beta download page.
[Back]
Does Cetus GPS work with the HandSpring Treo series?
Yes, but you may have some problems selecting the serial port where the GPS is connected. Until we solve this issue you might want to use the great little SetSerPort helper application written by Kolja Waschk.

Does Cetus GPS work with Palm units older than the Palm III?
No, Cetus GPS uses some features only available on Palm OS 3.0 and newer versions.
[Back]
Does Cetus GPS work with a Navman 350/500 GPS?
Yes, but the Navman 350/500 GPS requires a baudrate of 57600 which deviates from the NMEA standard that specifies a baudrate of 4800. You therefore need to set the baudrate to 57600 in the GPS Preferences.
[Back]
Does Cetus GPS work with a Trimble PathFinder Pocket GPS?
Yes, if you setup the GPS receiver as described here. Use the Trimble Pathfinder Controller application (available at the Trimble website) to reset the GPS to factory defaults and then change these settings:
- NMEA Output - ON
- Baudrate - 4800
- VTG - OFF
- RMC - ON
[Back]
Does Cetus GPS work with a DeLorme Earthmate GPS?
No, the current version of Cetus GPS does not support the DeLorme Earthmate GPS as it is unable to transmit data using the NMEA protocol.

Why is there sometimes a difference between the reported number of satellites and the satellites at the GPS page?
When no fix is available Cetus GPS reports the number of active satellites in view. This number is transmitted from the GPS and reflects the number of satellites marked active at the GPS page. When the GPS has a 2D, 3D or DGPS fix Cetus GPS reports the number of satellites used for the position calculation. This is not necessarily all the active satellites in view. Additionally some GPS receivers seems to have a delay of updating some of the satellite related information.

How come Cetus GPS only shows 'No fix' when I use it with a Rockwell chipset based (Rand McNally StreetFinder) GPS?
Without getting proper initialized the Rand McNally GPS receiver may have two problems. First the required NMEA sentences (GGA, RMC and GSV) may not be turned on and second the time to a valid satellite fix may be more than five minutes under good conditions. In order to solve the problem enable the "GPS init" option at the General Preferences" and make sure the UTC offset has been set correctly.

How come Cetus GPS shows year 2021 when I use it with a Rand McNally StreetFinder GPS?
This is caused by a bug in the Rand McNally GPS receiver. Several users have reported dates with the year set to 2021 right after acquiring a satellite fix. In order to preserve Palm time integrity Cetus GPS 1.0b13 and newer will not syncronize the Palm time before the RandMcNally GPS receiver transmits a valid date before year 2021.
If you see the year 2021 you need to turn off the Palm for two minutes so that the GPS receiver will shut off (remember that the
GPS receiver will stay on if it is being powered externally, so
disconnect the cigarette lighter adapter or the wall transformer). When the
GPS receiver turns off and you rerun Cetus GPS on your Palm the date should be fine.

How do I convert Tracks and Waypoint Lists to other formats?
Cetus GPS officially supports two utilities for converting Cetus GPS Tracks to other formats:
There are also a growing number of 3rd party applications available for Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X, Unix etc. that support the Cetus GPS Track and Waypoint List formats. Please look at the Application Support Info page for more information.

How do I suggest a new feature for Cetus GPS?
Please visit the Todo list. If the feature is not on the list you may suggest it as described on the page.

Do you plan to implement some kind of moving map?
When the track log page is ready, I will probably start working on some kind of vector map showing the track and waypoints. A moving bitmap would be nice, but it is quite time consuming to develop, so it does not have a high priority for now.

Can I buy a special edition of Cetus GPS for use or resale?
Yes, if you need a special feature for your dedicated use or you want to sell Cetus GPS under a different name, please mail me a description of your ideas and I will comment these and give you a price offer.
[Back]
Would it be possible to send me your source code?
No sorry, the Cetus GPS software is not open source. But you may download a track format description and some C source code for a track export utility, which enables you to export the Palm track data to your favorite format.

Would you consider working together with other developers?
I do work together with other developers already and I enjoy it as long as each of the parties get something out of it. I am, however, not willing to share the Cetus GPS source code as I consider the source code to be my intellectual property.

What development environment do you use?
I use the Mac OS version of MetroWerks CodeWarrior for Palm OS. For testing purposes I use the Mac OS POSE emulator.
[Back]
Can I get a copy of you development environment?
The Mac OS POSE emulator is available for free at www.palmos.com. MetroWerks CodeWarrior is commercial software.

Why did you change the project name from PathFinder to Cetus GPS?
Prior to version 1.0b1 the Cetus GPS project was called PathFinder. Surfing the web one day, however, I discovered that the GPS vendor Trimble has a series of GPS receivers also called PathFinder. Since Trimble makes some great GPS receivers and I don't se any reason to be unkind to them, I changed the name to Cetus GPS project. Please notice that I have not been in contact with Trimble and they did not in any way force me to change the name, it was purely an act of courtesy.
